The projected traffic <br />year used was 2010. The past traffic volume trends and tolerable <br />lane widths, along with the capacity deficiency analysis, were <br />used to determine the thoroughfare improvements for the Orange <br />County Thoroughfare Plan. This information is listed in Appendix <br />B, along with recommended pavement cross sections for roads <br />requiring widening. These roads were recommended to be widen to <br />either 22 or 24 feet depending on the projected traffic volumes on <br />these roads. Typical cross sections recommended by the <br />Statewide Planning Unit of the-North Carolina Department of <br />Transportation are shown in Appendix A. <br />Traffic Safety <br />Traffic accident reports are of assistance in locating <br />problem areas on the state road system. The 1989 Safety Program <br />Listing, obtained from the Traffic Engineering Branch of the North <br />Carolina Department of Transportation, shows the number of <br />accidents and their severity for every intersection located in <br />Orange County for the period January 1986 - June 1989. The high <br />frequency accident intersections are shown in Table 6. These <br />intersections were chosen due to the amount of accidents occurring <br />at the given location. The intersections located outside the <br />urban boundaries of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough (rural <br />areas) that had 10 or more accidents were listed. Inside the <br />urban boundaries of Carrboro and Hillsborough, only the <br />intersections with 20 or more accidents are shown. The <br />intersections with 40 or more accidents are shown for the Chapel <br />Hill urban boundary. <br />2 3 <br />59 <br />.0- <br />
