TO: Board of Orange County Commissioners
SUBJECT: Hunting and Fishing ordinance, and
"Spotlighting" for Deer
My family has Lived on Stanford Road since 1971, and we have
had unpleasant experiences in each of the 20 years because
of the irresponsibility of dove hunters. This area is dairy -
farming country and there are a lot of fields where the farmers
grow grain for their herds. Some of the farmers give per-
mission to the hunters, but a lot of them are passersby who
hunt because they see others or because they recognize a good
hunting site.
There are two unpleasant results from this. First, it is full
of potential for danger to persons and domestic animals. Very
often the hunters are firing close to residences, and there
are many tales in our neighborhood of shot falling on houses
and cars. I have personally had to approach some of these
hunters about moving away from my home, and I was more than a
little nervous about approaching a stranger who had a gun in
his hand. I hope we will not wait until a child, or adult,
is badly hurt or killed before we require those hunters to stay
a safe distance away from residences, Unfortunately your
ordinance does not address this, and it should.
Secondly, the noise and all of the trucks and people are an
intrusion on the peace of the neighborhood. Where is no sleep-
ing late when dove season is in, and that's just the start.
Your pets are in a state of shock from all of the shooting
noises for days afterward, and you cannot let your young child-
ren outside to play. The plain truth is that hunting is not
compatible with residential living, and there needs to be laws
to protect against this violent instrusion. The proposed
ordinance does not address this matter, either, and it most
definitely should.
The idea about requiring written permission for hunters will
not solve as much of this problem as you might believe. It is
almost as easy to manufacture or borrow or copy a note as it
is to fabricate an oral permission. This would only be a first
