ti
Letter to Mr. Moses Cary, Chairman
Page 2
Morning and evening shifts approximate a.m. /p.m.
traffic rush hours. Motor noise muffles many shots. This
season now winding down roughest in several years. There are
several Deer Crossings on our land on both roads. The Eno
and 2 creeks attract deer and other wildlife, so is a
Poachers' Paradise, with Durham expansion westward and Orange
development rapidly shrinking Poachers' easy pickings
Territory. I have noted many Durham License Plates and con-
fronted several Durham Poachers on my land.
At 7:30 a.m. December 26th, Mrs. Barbour started up our
driveway to St. Mary's Road for the newspaper (5 -6 hundred
feet). ..She was greeted by.loud gunfire and returned home
to dial 911. Another loud shot while on the phone. Officer
came quickly but Poachers had vanished. We are both Navy
veterans of WWII. Must we be killed by lawless men in our
own front yard?
I appreciate the opportunity to comment and apologize for
any duplication of State /County laws. The State Regulation
Digest is confusing to me by format which defies rapid com-
prehension. May I propose for your consideration:
1. No bright lights on any game at any time. DIGEST,
pg 21, Richmond Co.
2. No hunting on or from any Public Road or Right of
Way of Public Road or Public Utility at any time.
3. No running or hunting deer with dogs at any time in
Orange. DIGEST, pg 26. Now none South of I -85.
4. No spotting, flushing, or driving deer with either
airplane or helicopter in Orange.
5. No hunting from flat boat or other floating device
on any stream in Orange. DIGEST, pg 45, Martin Co.
6. That you confer with other states (i.e. CT, GA, TN)
where Black Market Venison is problem and if
appropriate require restaurants in NC to certify
source of all venison sold or advertised in Menu.
( "Venison - in season" is on some menus I've seen.)
7. That you publish.and make available to all citizens
a plain English version of combined State /County
"Cans and Cants of Hunting, Fishing and Trapping
in Orange.
8. That you raise the fine for violators to not more
than $400. No Judge will use our limited jail space
for a Poacher when felons are being parolled for
lack of space.
