FEB 13 '91 17.07 &MRRBuRu NC RL <br />[arrb ' <br />or( <br />N.C. <br />P.0, :BOX 3 <br />:307 LVast Main 5tr at <br />Ca.frburo, P;orm CwoJina _15:0 <br />The following ordinance was introduced by Alderman Frances Shetley <br />and duly seconded by Alderman Jay Bryan. <br />& RESOLUTION OPPOSING R -2528, RIGHT OJ' WAY PROTECTION <br />FOR THE WIDENING OF NC 54 <br />FROM I -40/85 IN BURLINGTON TO THE NC 54 BYPASS <br />Resolution No. 30/90--91 <br />WHEREAS, the proposed project would duplicate the route that <br />the recently built 1--40 provides; and <br />WHEREAS, the project would entice cars and large trucks to use <br />NC 54 as a short cut through Carrboro to connect with 1 -40 east of <br />town; and <br />WHEREAS, the project will cause negative environment <br />consequences including loss of forest land, agricultural land, and <br />disruption of natural habitats; and <br />WHEREAS, the project will erode the integrity of the Inn at <br />Bingham School, which is listed on the National Register of <br />Historic Places; and <br />WHEREAS, the project bisects the southern tip of Cane Creek <br />watershed and traverses the middle of University Lake watershed, <br />and will increase significantly the amount of impervious surface <br />area in these watersheds; and <br />WHEREAS, the project will cause increased noise levels in <br />Carrboro's high density, residential areas along 54 Bypass. <br />NOW THEREFORE, THE.BOARD.OF ALDERMEN OF THE TOWN OF CARRSORO <br />RESOLVES: <br />Section 1. The Board.of Aldermen opposes the proposal to widen <br />NC 54 from x -40/85 in Burlington to the Bypass (R- 2538). <br />Section 2. The Board of Aldermen requests that this project <br />be removed from the Transportation Improvement Program. <br />Section 3. This resolution shall become effective upon <br />adoption. <br />
