MMAF . T ' <br />AN ORDINANCE CREATING THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION OF <br />ORANGE COUNTY <br />WHEREAS, the historic heritage of the State of North Carolina <br />is one of our most valued and important assets; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Carolina General Statutes authorize <br />counties to safeguard the heritage.of the County by preserving <br />any historic sites therein that embody important elements of its <br />cultural, social, economic, political, archaeological or archi- <br />tectural history and to promote the use and conservation of such <br />site for the education, pleasure and enrichment of the residents <br />of the County and State as a whole; and <br />WHEREAS, the conservation of historic sites will stabilize and <br />increase the values in their areas and strengthen the overall <br />economy of the State;.and <br />WHEREAS, the County Commissioners of Orange County desire to <br />safeguard the heritage of the county by preserving historic <br />landmarks and historic districts; to enhance the environmental <br />quality of neighborhoods; to establish and improve property <br />values; to foster economic development; and <br />WHEREAS, the County Commissioners of Orange County do <br />therefore desire to create a commission to be known as the <br />Historic Preservation Commission of Orange County to perform the <br />duties of regulating historic landmarks and historic districts <br />pursuant to NCGS Chapter 16OA, Article 19, Part 3C and the <br />provisions of this ordinance. <br />NOW,, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COIINTY COMMISSIONERS OF <br />ORANGE COUNTY AS FOLLOWS: <br />Article 1. Historic Preservation Commission <br />Section 1.1 Establ'shment <br />Under the authority of Chapter 160A, Article 19, Part 3C, of <br />the North Carolina General Statutes, there is hereby established <br />the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission, hereafter <br />referred to as the "Commission ", consisting of seven (7) members. <br />Members shall serve without compensation, but they may be <br />reimbursed for incidental expenses incurred in connection with <br />official duties. <br />
