<br />The Orange Board of County Commissioners met on Monday. May 7, 1956, et ten
<br />c loeic in the Commissipne is room.
<br />Members present: Chairman R. J. '!. Hobbs, Commissioners Edvrin S. Lanier, Sim
<br />Efland, Dwight ?d. Rey and Henry S. Vlalker.
<br />Members absent: None.

<br />~~. idr. George Jones requested imnroveme nts to a street located insids of the city
<br />.limits of Hillsboro and knovrn as Boundary Street. Commissioner Lanier sugge sled that
<br />~e letter be requested from the State Highway Commission showing that said street had '
<br />~;boen refused because of its location end that said letter be turned over to Dir. Jones
<br />;so that he might present same to the town Hoard.
<br />Dir. '!:, A. Tri op of Chapel Hi 11 roe ue sted that the tez veluet ion be lowered on his
<br />':property. The 3oard agreed to inspect said prooerty. '
<br />idr, Ed Barnes, P.ss t. Farm Agent, gave en interesting report on Orange County's !ice

<br />Mrs. Bonnie Davis, Negro Home Demonstration a.gen t, M. C. Burt, Negro Farm Agent,
<br />'and ?drs. E11s Trice, Council President, requested that the first storeroom located in {
<br />'the basement of the ^ew courthouse be given the Negro Home Demonstration De p¢rtment for ',
<br />ithe purpose of building e kitchen. This committee was asked to contact Mr, Archi= Davis,,'i-
<br />7~.arch?tact for said courthouse, and get his opinion as to whether said storeroom could ':i
<br />'.be converted into a suitable kitchen. The committee '.vas asked to investigate the cost ,
<br />'of the entire program and bring all the date to the Hoard when it had been collected.
<br />Mr. Hume Cleytor end Cashe Hoggs, County Dog 4'erdan, gave the re ~Ort on this ;
<br />.program for the months for M1i¢rch and April, 1956. ''.
<br />'~ Paul Ranson, County P.ttorney, ra ported to the Hoard that according tp the
<br />~'.etatutes nothing could be done at the present time to prohibit the race track, which -
<br />has been ono ned on the Orange Grove Roed, from operating in this county, fitr. Ranson
<br />suggested that in the next legislature an act be introduced prohob iting race tracks
<br />~,in Ore nge County or limiting the number of races vrhich could be held ~.vi thin the county. ~i
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner Efland, seconded by Commissioner Lanier, end
<br />~lunanimously pas sad, St was ordered that Emory Denng, Jr., proceed v+i th the plans he
<br />'shed outlined in his letter to the Board concerning the tax suits which ere to be
<br />fins ti toted. The Hoard authorized Dir. Lynch, Clark of Court, to appoint Mr. Danny
<br />as Commissioner in all the tax sales.
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner Efland, seconded by Commissioner Ra l end unanimously

<br />.Lawrence 'n. Dean es overpayment on taxes due to an error in the tax listing. Ltr.
<br />Gattis was ask to contact tdr. Peacock about the refund of the taz money in connection
<br />vri th the tax collected from the Cha Del Hill Special School tax. :.
<br />The County P.cc ountent was given authority to cash the following bonds: '.
<br />520,00 of Series F IInlted States Savings 9onds said bond ovrned by
<br />the School Building Fund.
<br />X5,000.00 23,`6 United States Treasury bond due 6/1 /62-b7 ead
<br />$18,000.00 2~ United States Treasury bond due 9/!5/56-59 said
<br />bonds ovrned by the School Capital Outlay Fund. '
<br />510,000.00 Se rigs G IInlted States Savings Bond due 9/1/55 oc+ned
<br />~!i by the School Capital Outlay Pund and the 1927 Surplus Fund.
<br />The Board discussed the problom arising from the parking area located beside
<br />j
<br />'lths new courthouse. Said parking area is being used by persons other then county
<br />Pemnl oyees and causing poi to a bit of congestion.
<br />~ Dr. Charles E, Maddry and the Rev. W. I. Conway appeared on behalf of the churches
<br />iin Hillsboro repues ting that the Hoard take immediate action on the problem o° the
<br />~,j elooy race track located on the Orange Grove Road. The Board informed the men that ¢t
<br />the present time there eras no legal way that thoy as a Board of County Commissioners
<br />~,c paid stop the opening or operating of said race track.
<br />', IIpon motion of Commissioner Lanier, seconded by Commissioner Efland and unanimously
<br />~bassed, it was ordered that a survey be made of the south line of the courthouse
<br />property in order to establish the said south line.
