c- <br />21 <br />During 1987, 98 cases of child abuse or neglect were <br />substantiated in children and adolescents ages 0 -17 in Orange <br />County. According to the I.C. Child Advocacy Institute, <br />Orange County ranked 90th in the state for reported cases. <br />12.58% of children aged 0 -17 live at or below the <br />poverty level. (See Table 13) Approximately 2,050 of Orange <br />County public school students receive free or reduced rate <br />lunch and /or breakfast. 20,492 breakfasts and 102,979 <br />lunches are served in an average month in the Orange County <br />public schools. Eligible public school students receive <br />$8500 /year in school health funds for dental care. <br />The rates of death among young people under the age of <br />20 in Orange County by accident, both motor vehicle and <br />other, are 32% and 85% lower than the state respectively. <br />However, the suicide rate is 22% higher than that of the <br />state. <br />In the fall of 1987, the North Carolina Alcohol and Drug <br />Defense Program, a Division of the N.C. Department of Public <br />Instruction published the results of a student survey it had <br />conducted in grades 7 -12 in public schools statewide. <br />- 6 of 10 students reported having used alcohol at least once <br />1 in every 3 students reported alcohol use in the month <br />preceding the survey <br />- More than 1 in every 5 students reported smoking tobacco in <br />the month preceding the survey <br />More than 1 in 10 reported using smokeless tobacco <br />4 in every 10 reported having used marijuana or hashish at <br />least once <br />15% reported marijuana or hashish use in the month <br />preceding the survey <br />8% reported marijuana or hashish use on school grounds <br />Less than 1 in 10 students reported using cocaine or crack <br />- 2.55% reported cocaine use in the month preceding the <br />survey _ <br />- Males reported more drug-use than did--females <br />- Blacks reported less drug use than did whites or American <br />Indians <br />- Drug use in urban areas was greater -than_ in rural areas_ <br />N.C. high school seniors. exceeded national averages verages far <br />marijuana and inhalant use, but were -below national_ <br />averages for other drugs, including tobacco <br />18 <br />
