Page 6 <br />Carrboro with it's Animal Control Program, the Town's bite <br />investigations are also accounted for. <br />Of all bites to humans, 835. were inflicted by dogs, 10o by <br />cats and the remainder by miscellaneous wildlife and pets. <br />Approximately 1 out of 4 animals that have bitten people <br />were declared to be vicious animals. Twenty six Vicious <br />Animal Confinement Orders were issued as a result of bites to <br />humans this year.. Sixty six additional reports were <br />received of animals that have attacked livestock and other <br />animals. As a result, twelve of these animals were declared <br />to be vicious. <br />Owners of vicious animals are issued the Vicious Animal <br />Confinement order which explains the definition of <br />"vicious ",instructed on how to adequately confine or restrain <br />the animal and the penalties for failure to comply. <br />Failure to confine or restrain any vicious animal may <br />result in the animals impoundment, penalties and /or further <br />legal actions. <br />Sixteen penalties were issued this year for failure to <br />comply to the standards of Vicious Animal Control. Two <br />criminal cases were pursued, terminating in $225 in penalties <br />and the surrender of one animal to Animal Control. <br />RABIES CONTROL <br />Overall enforcement of the North Carolina Rabies Control <br />Laws is performed through the Animal Licensing program. <br />All dogs and cats 4 months of age or older must be current <br />on their rabies inoculations prior to licensing. To ensure <br />proper vaccine administration and effectiveness, a <br />veterinarian's signature is required with each vaccine <br />renewal. <br />Improvements in the Rabies Control program (& Animal <br />Licensing)- includes notifying owner's annually when the <br />rabies vaccination is due, eliminating the need for owners to <br />supply the rabies tag. numbers -,--regular updating of individual <br />animal's rabies data and keeping updated, organized and <br />retrievable veterinary vaccination certifications. Prior to <br />these improvements, pet owners had the responsibility of <br />maintaining personal files of rabies vaccination dates, <br />rabies certifications and were required to supply rabies tag <br />numbers prior to licensing their pets. <br />
