Smith Reynolds Foundation Opportunities for 19 <br />Families Fund grant proposal goals include strengthening <br />collaboration among human services agencies. <br />4.Need for special training in human behavioral courses for <br />guidance counselors and teachers. <br />5-Reevaluate the current education system: <br />-- Clarify definitions and standards of society and the <br />educational systems <br />G.Develop parent /school partnerships to enhance <br />communication. <br />ongoing orange County Schools have initiated a Parent Advisory <br />Council to strengthen outreach and communication to <br />parents. <br />completed Seawell Community Learning Environment Project was funded <br />for two years, ending in spring 1990, to foster a home - <br />school- community partnership to improve the learning <br />environment for at -risk students. Activities included <br />home visits, parent volunteer programs, and after - school <br />enrichment programs. <br />7-Provide special training for teachers to work on the <br />critical element of guidance services, as well as to <br />eliminate built in attitudes regarding poverty. <br />8-Provide action and awareness sessions on poverty to combat <br />feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and isolation in <br />disadvantaged youth. <br />9-Provide parity in both school systems, with equal <br />educational opportunities for all school children. <br />10.Urge superintendents to provide leadership in addressing <br />the adverse effects of poverty on students in public <br />schools. <br />11.Analyze trends and plan for the future. <br />Completed The Economic Development Commission submitted its <br />Strategic Plan in March 1989. <br />
