5-Continue alternative programs for at --risk students, 6 <br />substance abuse assessment, and Work for Success groups. <br />ongoing Teachers in both school systems are trained in the Quest <br />Program, which is directed toward building self- esteem and <br />decision making skills within youth. The program also <br />addresses alcohol prevention issues. Alcohol and drug <br />education continue to be high priorities in the school <br />systems, and both school systems are now utilizing the <br />Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program as one <br />component of their approach. <br />Dngoing Chapel Hill High school is currently providing the Work <br />for Success program and seeking funding to insure its <br />continuation. <br />6.Strengthen parental involvement in schools by: <br />- Training teachers to conduct conferences with parents <br />of at -risk students <br />- Adding school social workers for home /school <br />coordination <br />- Educating parents and starting support groups <br />- Creating innovative programs to meet with parents at <br />their job sites (such a program is currently conducted <br />at NC Memorial Hospital) <br />- Involving Dropout Prevention Task Force <br />ongoing orange County schoolst Community schools Program Director <br />has initiated a system -wide Parent Advisory Council to <br />improve outreach and communication with parents. <br />:�ompleted Orange County schools' middle school teachers have <br />attended workshops which emphasized conducting conferences <br />with parents of at -risk students. <br />7.Provide more flexible schedules for students. <br />8-Alter expectations about "normal" time in which a student <br />should finish high school. <br />:!ompleted Students receive counseling on this subject. <br />ongoing orange County Schools have established an Early Graduation <br />Task Force which is exploring this concern. <br />9.Consider an extended day program in which high school <br />students may attend school after work. such a program <br />should provide them with school bus transportation and <br />support services as well. <br />
