Completed Recent achievements of the Economic Development 8 <br />Commission include: <br />- Establishment of an Orange County office of the Small <br />Business and Technology Development Center to provide <br />assistance to the Countyls small businesses. <br />- Implementation of a Visitor's Services Agreement with <br />local Chambers of Commerce to expand staffing of <br />current visitor's centers and to develop a county -wide <br />program. <br />- Launch of a new marketing effort to attract new, <br />appropriate industries. <br />4.Encourage basic income to all: <br />-More competitive wages and improved working conditions <br />- Critical need for primary employers to reclassify jobs <br />and raise wage scales <br />-Need for wages to be comparable to cost of living in <br />the County <br />-Need for employers to put more resources into <br />training /education for a better work force <br />-Need for employers to offer incentives to continue/ <br />finish education <br />- Utilize volunteer programs that increase productivity <br />(e.g. Habitat for Humanity and Literacy Council) <br />ongoing There are currently five GED programs located on job sites <br />in the County. <br />5-Promote farming in the County: <br />- Provide workable regulations for land use and water <br />quality <br />- Promote and coordinate a County farmers market <br />Ongoing The Economic Development Commission, the Agricultural <br />Extension service, the NC Rural Development Center, and the <br />Small Business and Technology Development.Center have begun <br />to establish a linkage to provide business assistance and <br />counseling to agricultural concerns. <br />
