LICENSING REQUIREMENTS FOR LARGE HOMES 3 5, <br />Large Child Day Care Homes must be licensed by the State of North Carolina <br />and must display that license at all times when children are in care. The <br />purpose of the licensing requirements Is to: (1) protect the health and safety <br />of the children, (2) assure that persons who operate the home and who provide <br />care to the children have some training and experience In group child care, <br />and (3) provide children In care with adequate space, equipment and <br />opportunities for Indoor and outdoor activities appropriate to their ages. <br />Some of the requirements for large homes are summarized below: <br />HEALTH AND SAFETY <br />Every large home must be Inspected to show that It meets applicable fire, <br />sanitation, and building codes. Operators must also comply with local zoning <br />requirements. <br />Monthly fire drills and a plan for emergency medical care are required. <br />The operator of tlir, home must keep records for Tech child which Include <br />medical statements, Immunization records, ottendanre records, and Informal /on <br />which Is needed for the child's health and safety. The parent must provide <br />the operator with the following Information: who to contact in an emergency, <br />who Is allowed to take the child away from the home, and what allergies or <br />special health problems the child has. The parent must also give the operator <br />written permission to get emergency medical attention for the child. <br />When a child needs to be given medicine, the home must hove written <br />instructions from the parent, or from, the child's doctor If It Is a <br />prescription medicine. <br />If the home transports children, It must comply with state safety standards <br />Including those for the driver's license, vehicle Inspection, and child <br />restraints or seat belts. Also, the parent must give the operator written <br />Permission to transport the child. <br />STAFF <br />There are limitations on the total number of children who can be present In <br />o large home. All children who are younger than 13 years, except the <br />operator's own school -age children, must be counted, if all the children <br />present are school - aged,as many as 15 children may he cared for at one <br />time. if there are any younger children present the home may have no more <br />than 12 children at one time. <br />• <br />There are also the following limits on the number of children who may be <br />cored for by one person: <br />Age Range of Children Number of Children Allowed <br />-- In the Care of 1 person <br />Al! Younger than Age 4 - - - - -- 6 <br />Birth.through Age 12 ---=---- - - - - -- 8 (and no more than 3 children <br />Age 2 through 12 10 may be younger than 1 year old) <br />Age 3 through 12 ------------------ 12 <br />All school -age --------------- -- - - -- 1s <br />No person who has been convicted of abuse or neglect may work, live or <br />otherwise be present In a home. <br />Caregivers must be literate and at least 16 years old, but no one younger <br />Than 18 may be In charge of the children. The person responsible for the <br />operation of the home must be at least 21 years old and have at least one <br />Year's experience caring for children In a day core home or center. <br />Before being employed, each staff person must have a doctor's statement <br />saying he or she Is able to care for children. Every staff person must update <br />this health Information and have o tuberculosis test every year. <br />After being hired, staff members are required to have at least 20 hours of <br />training each year. At least one person must be able to recognize common <br />infectious diseases and one staff person must he tralnorf in fled ,dw <br />
