It is my understanding that the Boar
of Commissioners must approve the process by which this is
done, therefore I am requesting your approval for the
following.
I would like to have a commission member available in a
public facility (such as the Orange County Library, Chapel
Hill Library, etc.) for one afternoon per month, to accept,
or monitor complaints from individuals. These will be
logged and kept confidential. This would be a mechanism fo
people to confidentially (NOT ANONYMOUSLY) report incidents
We will make it clear that we do not have enforcement
powers, and that our ability to assist Andividuals is
limited to referral. We will solicit materials and
cooperation from county and private agencies to provide
informational materials on their services. This will help
us in developing a broader base of information for ongoing
needs assessment.
As you know, this is not a new idea. This same type of
schedule of outreach is used by the EEOC. It is, however,
new level of commitment by the commission. This would
require only one afternoon per year by each member (actual:
less than that) and I feel that even a volunteer commissiol
can achieve this level of service.
Please let me know if more detailed information is
order for you to make a decision. I look forward
from you.
cc: HRC membership
2
a
F1
needed in
to heari ng
