OR AN G E C O U N T Y
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: OCTOBER 1, 1990
Action Agenda
Item # =X--
SUBJECT: REPORT ON PROCESS TO RESOLVE DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINTS
DEPARTMENT: COMMISSIONERS
ATTACHMENT(S):
MEMO FROM JEAN BOLDUC
PUBLIC HEARING: Yes _X —No
INFORMATION CONTACT:
MOSES CAREY, EXTENSION 2130
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough - 732 -8181
Durham - 688 -7331
Mebane - 227 --2031
Chapel Hill - 967 - 9251/968 -4501
PURPOSE: To report on procedures to be established that would
resolve discrimination complaints and problems.
BACKGROUND: After a discussion with Jean Bolduc, I have asked
staff to work with the Human Relations Commission to
develop plans for the processing of complaints, and
training of volunteers. This training would offer
information on the availability of existing resources
and institutions designed to resolve discrimination
complaints and problems as well as to insure that
proper referral is made for those problems where
existing institutions can be of assistance. This
training will also insure that proper follow -up is
conducted to determine what happened as a result of a
complaint and if the complainant followed through with
the agency to whom they were referred.
If there is no existing resource we need to maintain a
list of those complaints because we may at a later
time see fit to pass ordinances to prohibit that
particular type of discrimination in Orange County.
RECOMMENDATION:
