Design Arts Program National Endowment for the Arts Nancy Hanks Center 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20506 To Whom it Concerns: I am writing to express support of Triangle J Council of Government's grant application for the Regional Image Guidelines project. This project represents an important follow - through effort begun almost three years ago with NEA support and documented in the recently published Building a Regional Image report. The proposed Regional Image Guidelines project responds to growing concerns in this community and others throughout the Region for development standards that are both practical g_n_g! sensitive to local visual character. The project as outlined will build on the survey findings reported in Building a Regional Image and will go on to involve .citizens in a series of workshops that will help to further articulate specific appearance and image issues that need to be addressed in the guidelines. When completed these guidelines can be integrated into the planning and ' development review process of city and county governments. Moreover, it will continue the very important effort of raising the level of public awareness about local and regional appearance issues. Triangle J has proven their capability in the area of community and regional appearance with the work that resulted in Building a Regional Image and with the on -going work of the Triangle J Regional Appearance Committee e which has sponsored workshops and other projects that have contributed to the quality of this Region's image.
