7
Rt..3, Box 772
Hillsborough, N.C,,,27278
April 25, 1990
Mr. Marvin Collins
Planning Department
Orange County
Hillsborough, N.C. 27278
Dear Mr. Collins:
I am writing to support the proposed amendment to the
planning ordnance concerning efficiency apartments.
That it would allow "offices" such as presently grace a
number of older houses makes sense to me.
The people I know living on ten or more acres in the rural
part of the county usually think they have the right to
build an accessory dwelling unit. They tend to begin to
consider the matter seriously in order to care for an aged
parent while maintaining as much independence as possible
for all concerned.
So the accessory dwelling should meet the standards for the
handicapped and therefore should have a maximum size of 800
square feet, no matter what the size of the main residence.
The change suggested could be effected by adding to the end
of the first sentence of paragraph 1 (of the proposed
amendment) the following: "if attached, and no more than
800 square feet if detached from the principal dwelling.
Or shorter and more sensible would be to let the first
sentence read: "The efficiency unit contains no more than
800 square feet."
Yours sinceeJrely,
dack G. Gilbert
cc: Mrs. Eidenier
