Finkbeiner, Pettis & Strout, Limited
.Consulting Engineers
Es,aol sneo 1900
Mr. I. Harding Hughes,Jr.,
Town of Hillsborough
P.O. Box 429
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Harding:
January 14, 1987
Town Administrator
LI,
K_
Re: Sewer be Water Extension Review
Orange County School Board
Hillsborough, NC
We have completed the feasibility study for the extension of water and sewer
service to the intersection of new NC 86 and New Hope Church Road as requested by
Dr. Dan Lunsford, Orange County School Superintendent. In addition to water and
sewer service, we also reviewed the potential for supplying fire protection to a
proposed 700 student elementary school on the site.
General
Water and sewer service currently extends along NC 86 as far south as the
Woodsedge Mobile Home development. Water is supplied through a 6 -inch main at
Woodsedge that connects back to a 12 -inch main at Wildwood Subdivision. From that
point, the 12 -inch main ties into the city -wide system at US 70 (Business Route).
Sewer service is much more complicated. Sewage from Woodsedge is collected
from the individual units and pumped by means of a 5 -Hp duplex pumping station to
Wildwood through a 3 -inch force main. The sewage empties into the Wildwood pumping
station, where it is pumped by a 7.5 -Hp duplex station through a 6 -inch force main to
US 70. At that point, however, a bottleneck in the system develops. The 6 -inch line
reduces to a 3 -inch force main extending all the way to the wastewater treatment
plant. This section of line is the limiting factor in determining sewage transport
capacity from this area.
Water Service
Domestic Water. Service with On -site Fire Protection Capabilities
Non -fire demand water service can be provided to the school by means of
constructing a new 12 -inch main from a tie -in point at Woodsedge to the proposed
school site. The Town of Hillsborough requires that a 12 -inch line be installed to
provide for future expansion and looping of the system in the New Hope Church Road
area. Calculations show that the demand of 10,500 GPD placed on the water system by
the school would maintain residual water pressures above psi in all parts the line.
The project will consist of installing 6,500 feet of 12 -in ch PVC water main n with the
2301 West Meadowview Road / Greensboro.
