Cablevision of Durham desired
to serve approximately 253 homes in specific areas of North-
eastern Orange County. The areas border Durham County where
Cablevision of Durham has extended cablevision service to the
Orange County Line.
At the February 20 Board meeting, Carolina Cable voiced
objection to Durham Cablevision expansion into Orange County.
Although Carolina Cable services are not currently in the
areas, the general manager of Carolina Cable stated their
franchise agreement with the County covers the entire County
and cable TV service could be extended to the areas. After
discussions with both cable companies, the Board requested
the Manager to review the situation further and recommend how
the areas should be serviced. Additionally, the Board
requested resolution of Durham Cablevision cable connections
to a few homes in Orange County without a franchise
agreement.
Cablevision of Durham proposal to serve the area remains the
same. Carolina Cable, at the request of staff, has submitted
a proposal outlining expanded services to the areas. Carolina
Cable's proposal indicates the areas can be served within six
months contingent on approval of a cable TV corridor through
Durham County and weather conditions.
