PUBLIC HEARING YES: NO: XX
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: PAM JONES
EXT 2650
BID TABULATIONS Telephone Number -
FLOOR PLAN Hillsborough - 732 -8181
PROPOSED CAPITAL PROJECT ORDINANCE Chapel Hill - 967 -9251
Mebane - 227 -2031
Durham -688 -7331
PURPOSE: To consider awarding a bid for the expansion of the Animal
Shelter; and to consider approving the contracts for construction,
contingent upon Attorney and Purchasing Director review.
BACKGROUND: The funding for this project was included in the 1988 bond
issue. A total of $300,000 was allocated, which included $30,000 for
design services and $270,000 for construction and associated expenses.
The design fees, site planning through construction, will cost $30,031.
It is estimated that items for which the Owner is responsible during
construction will cost approximately $5,000. This includes such items
as testing of soils, concrete, new water meter from OWASA, etc. Each
of these considered, a construction budget of $265,000 remains.
On May 24, 1990 bids were taken to add approximately 4300 square feet
of additional kennels (24 total kennels), covered vehicle pull -in area
for loading /unloading animals, puppy /kitten outside area, and multi-
purpose area. The bids totaled $306,201 ($71.21 /sq.ft.); a $41,201
shortfall from the $265,000 construction budget.
Negotiation with the low bidders allowed the construction figure to be
reduced to $275,885, $10,885 over the alotted construction budget.
This allows the construction of 24 kennels, vehicle loading /unloading
area, the puppy /kitten area with outside exercise lot, and other areas
as indicated on the attached drawing. It does not however, include the
multi - purpose area and the parking made necessary by the addition of
this room.
