f
CURRENT INITIATIVES (Child Care) 11
* Several efforts are underway to address some of the needs for quality and
afordable child care:
-- Orange County government provides a $90,000 subsidy fund which is
administered by the Department of Social Services. Funds are used to
provide child care assistance for teen parents, and abused and neglected
children.
-- Chapel Hill /Carrboro Schools system is considering pre school services
for 3 and 4 year olds. A pilot program for this population
will probably be introduced soon at one of the elementary schools.
Public /Private Partnership has an active child care committee that has
conducted an assessment of child care needs in the county.
The committee is in the process of developing specific recommendations
for addressing some of the identified issues.
-- Child care agencies that participate in the department of Social Services
administered subsidy program meet monthly to coordinate services and to
provide mutual support.
8
