25
August 18, 1989
Editor
Chapel Hill Herald
106 tlaliette St.,
Chapel Hill, NC 27514
On the agenda of the August 28 public hearing before the Orange County hoard
of Commissioners is an innocuous sounding request for a zoning change near the
intersection of New Hope Church Road and J -40. Envirotek Inc. requests that
265 acres be rezoned from rural buffer to agricultural residential. However,
:hen one realizes that Envirotek Inc. is a front oryanixation for the Ivello
Teer Co., this request takes on rather frightening dimensions. If this
property is rezoned, Nello Teer can then request a special use permit that
will allow the destruction of these 265 acres by the development of a massive
gravel quarry.
Last April Envirotek floated a similar "wolf -in- sheep's clothing" request. At
this time, they requested that approximately 400 acres of the rural buffer at
the New Hope Church Road .interchange be rezoned to allow the construction of a
gas station, bakery, and other commercial establishments. During the April
public hearing, it soon became obvious that this maneuver was a thinly veiled
ruse by the Nello Teer Co. to obtain quarrying rights in the buffer. The,
planning board and the county commissioners voted unanimously to deny the
Envirotek request, and many of us were naive enough 'to think that this phase
of the issue was settled - -at least for a while.
Well, we were wrong, and I urge all concerned citizens to attend the August
28th public hearing in Hillsborough and voice their opposition to the
continuing efforts of the Nello Teer Co. to blight the Orange County landscape
with a permanent scar, a scar I might add, that could extend well beyond the
265 acres currently in question.
Sincerel ,
_Trawi'Ck Ward
5209 Walnut Cove Rd.
Chapel Hill 27516
Ph 929 -6702
