2
this meeting, the Committee appointed a
subcommittee of five persons (three
planners /demographers, plus one representative from
both school systems). This group was formed to
specifically analyze the state's projections, other
alternatives; the discrepancy between the overall
rate of growth and enrollment projections; and the
projected geographic areas of enrollment growth.
This subcommittee reported its findings to the full
group on May 17 (please see attached report), and
these findings were accepted and recommended to the
Board of Commissioners for consideration.
In general, the Committee finds that the state's
enrollment projections (which show the City system
growing at a significantly faster pace that the
County system) are the most reliable and
feasible for use. The Committee also felt that the
state's enrollment projections were validated by
research into housing and migration, which
indicated several "key" areas of potential
enrollment growth through the next decade. Lastly,
the Committee was able to agree that overall County
population does not often "track" with enrollment
trends, and series of graphs provided in the report
illustrates this point.
In summary, the Committee accepts the state
Department of Public Instruction's enrollment
projections, and recommends its use for planning
and programming school facilities and needs in the
19901s.
RECOMMENDATION: Receive as information.
