s- ORANGE COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT
306F REVERE ROAD
HILLSBOROUGH, NORTH CAROLINA 27278
a
¢4
A
MEMORANDUM
TO: Marvin Collins, Planning Director
FROM:
Don Powell,
Information
Services Supervisor
SUBJECT:
Petition to
re -name Old
N.C. 86
DATE: May 23, 1990
I received a copy of the petition sent by Robert Haas to
change the name of Old N.C. 86 to Old Chapel Hill Road, and
to assign numbered addresses accordingly.
Approximately 100 addresses have been assigned along Old N.C.
86 to residents of old rural routes 2,4 and 11 served by the
Chapel Hill post office. Some of these assigned addresses
date back to 1987, the year we began the project. Until we
received Mr. Haas' request, no one had objected to the use of
Old N.C. 86 as their address. On the contrary, when
residents of old route 11 were polled for their choice of
street addresses along that portion of the road extending
south from Calvander to the intersection of Greensboro Street
and Hillsborough Road, they chose Old N.C. 86.
In our experience in address assigning for the past three
years, we have gotten a pretty good feel for the choices of
the citizens for what they want to call the road they live
on. We would caution Mr. Haas to consider the addresses
already assigned to Old N.C. 86, addresses which we in good
faith informed the citizens were permanent. We would be
doing these people a disservice to put them through another
address change for the sake of personal and arbitrary
feelings of a few.
Additionally, a road known as Old Chapel Hill Road already
exists, the road leading from Durham to Chapel Hill which
roughly parallels US 15/501, and listed on the County road
map as Legion Road Extension. Some confusion may result if
another road is given the same name as a road which is known
by many County residents as Old Chapel Hill Road.
If Mr. Haas is insistent upon pursuing his desire to change
the name, then he has the right to petition this office with
a majority of the signatures of residents of Old N.C-86 who
concur with his wishes. The Board of Commissioners may then
consider the change.
