MEMORANDUM
TO: JOHN LINK, COUNTY MANAGER
BEVERLY BLYTHE, CLERK TO THE COMMISSIONERS
,
FROM: MARVIN COLLINS, PLANNING DIRECTOR
DATE: MAY 23, 1990
SUBJECT: PETITION TO RE -NAME OLD N.C. 86
COPIES: DON POWELL, INFORMATION SERVICES SUPERVISOR
LM249gp
D
I received the attached petition on or about May 22 and
forwarded it to Don Powell for review and comment. Don's
response is attached.
I concur with Don's position in that a change to the road
name would require address changes for many residents again_.
In addition, the proposed name, Old Chapel Hill Road,
conflicts with the name given to an existing road.
Duplication of road names is to be avoided wherever possible
to eliminate confusion on the part of Emergency Services
personnel. Since both roads are in the vicinity of Chapel
Hill- Carrboro, such a change would probably violate G.S.
153A -240 (See #3 of attached statute).
If Mr. Haas wishes to speak to this issue at the May 29
public hearing, he is entirely within his rights. However, if
the Board of Commissioners wishes to seriously consider such
a change, a separate public hearing would be required (See
attached G.S. 153A -240).
If you have questions, let me know.
