COPY - NCOOT
May 7, 1990
Dear Residents of Orange County:
I would like to take this opportunity to comment on the
Orange County Thoroughfare Plan. To accommodate Orange County's
request, the Orange County Thoroughfare Plan is based on the
Orange County Road Classification system.
The County Road Classification plan uses similar terminology
for road classifications as that used in the State system,
however, the terms represent different classes of roads. In order
to clarify these discrepancies, the Orange County Thoroughfare
Plan includes on its legend the County classification and its
corresponding State equivalent classification. The equivalents
hold true for all but two instances. US 70 and NC 86 are Primary
Arterials on the County Classification system which corresponds to
a Minor Arterial on the State system, but in these cases the two
are major collectors. This is due to the fact that the State
Minor and Principle Arterials are classified on a statewide basis
and federal guidelines allow for a maximum percentage of arterial
road mileage compared to total road mileage for the state. North
Carolina is currently exceeding this percentage, therefore it is
not possible to reclassify
Sincerely,
Danny Roger
