a
road is proposed to be widened to a four -lane divided section from
the eastern plan boundary to just west of the (eastern) Eno River
bridge, inclusive of a new structure. West of the (eastern) Eno
River bridge to the proposed Western Bypass, a five -lane section
is recommended. Beyond the Western Bypass, a four -lane divided
facility is proposed on existing US 70 to the I -85 - US 70
connector.
East -west radial /crosstown movement on the southern side of
town is provided by the combination of Mayo, Eno Mountain, Ben
Johnston, and West Ten Roads. Mayo Road is a proposed three lane
relocation with an ultimate five -lane section, while Eno Mountain
Road is a proposed two -lane relocation with an ultimate three lane
facility. Ben Johnston is an existing two -lane road with a
proposed three -lane section and West Ten is a proposed three -lane
relocation. This corridor could greatly reduce truck traffic on
King Street and West Hill Avenue.
Other radial /crosstown streets include Oakdale Drive, Shawnee
Drive, Elizabeth Brady Road, and the combination of Miller, St.
Mary's and King Street.
Oakdale Drive would be extended from Old Chapel Hill Road to
NC 86 as a two -lane facility which could be expanded to three
lanes. Shawnee Drive is a proposed two -lane section that would
serve as an east-west crosstown as Hillsborough grows northward,
providing an alternative to using US 70.
The extension of Elizabeth Brady Road (SR 1879) would serve
as a north -south crosstown on the eastern side, thereby providing
needed relief to Churton Street. The intersection of US 70 and
Saint Mary's Road (SR 1002) would be revised such that traffic
would no longer be encouraged to use Saint Mary's to go to central
Hillsborough. Open space along the Eno River should be protected
from inappropriate development, which construction of this two -
lane road could encourage. Access along Elizabeth -Brady Road
should be greatly restricted and a high -span structure should be
utilized to cross the river.
The Miller, St. Mary's, King Street combination would provide
an internal crosstown street with the proposed two -lane extension
of Miller Road to proposed Northside Drive and the two -lane
extension of King Street to proposed King Edward Road.
LOOP SYSTEM
The proposed loop system consists primarily of Lawrence,
Baldwin, Northside Drive, Western Bypass, King Edward, Dimmock's
Mill, Davis, and NC 86 and a short portion of Old NC 10. The
projects involved with the loop system include the proposed
widening of Lawrence Road to a three -lane section, and ultimate
W
