My wife
and I have been longtime supporters of the NC Therapeutic Riding Center; in fact they
operate out of our farm. I have also been involved in the past with the Orange County
Dispute Settlement Center, working with them as a mediator an public meeting facilitator.
Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards:
None
Boards/Commissions applied for:
Human Relations Commission
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
I have been involved with helping humans accept and get a long with each other ever since
college in a multitude of ways, most notably as a professional counselor, neighborhood
mediator, newspaper reporter and activist on issues including race, voting rights and economic
justice. In the 1990s, after I left my reporting job at the News &Observer, I started a monthly
nonprofit newspaper in Chatham County(where I lived at the time)called Chatham Crossroads;
the motto was where all voices are heard . That motto captures for me a guiding principle in all
that I do.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
First, I have a passion for helping people get along better. Bringing people together, helping
them set down their defenses and truly listen to each other opens doors of possibility for mutual
understanding and discovering common ground. Second, I have a passion for justice, and
making sure the little guy doesn t get stepped on in whatever situation comes before me.
Conflict of Interest:
Supplemental Questions:
