Disability Employment Awareness Month Proclamation <br /> 3 The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation designating October 2017 as <br /> 4 Disability Employment Awareness Month, and authorizing the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 5 Tyran Fennell, Human Resources Manager, said she is here on behalf of Brenda <br /> 6 Bartholomew, Human Resources Director, and is joined by Johnny Burnette and Thelma Cox <br /> 7 from Vocational Rehabilitation. <br /> 8 Tyran Fennell reviewed the background information below: <br /> 9 <br /> 10 BACKGROUND: <br /> 11 October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Persons with disabilities have <br /> 12 skills, talents, and dreams, and with respect and acceptance, individuals with disabilities — <br /> 13 mental or physical —can participate in society and the work force to their fullest capacity. <br /> 14 Workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, are a <br /> 15 critical part of Orange County efforts to build an inclusive community and strong economy. <br /> 16 <br /> 17 Commissioner McKee read the proclamation: <br /> 18 <br /> 19 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PROCLAMATION <br /> 20 DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH <br /> 21 OCTOBER 2017 <br /> 22 <br /> 23 WHEREAS, October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month; and <br /> 24 <br /> 25 WHEREAS, workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, <br /> 26 are a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive community and strong economy; and <br /> 27 <br /> 28 WHEREAS, the United States Department of Labor has designated October as National <br /> 29 Disability Employment Awareness Month to bring greater awareness to the many contributions <br /> 30 people with disabilities make daily to all communities; and <br /> 31 <br /> 32 WHEREAS, Orange County recognizes that persons with disabilities offer the workplace great <br /> 33 talent and we cannot afford to overlook or not use to their talents to the highest potential; and <br /> 34 <br /> 35 WHEREAS, Orange County believes diversity in the workforce is reflective of our community's <br /> 36 commitment to inclusivity; <br /> 37 <br /> 38 NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim <br /> 39 October 2017 as Disability Employment Awareness Month and encourage employers, schools <br /> 40 and other community organizations in Orange County to advance its important message that <br /> 41 people with disabilities are equal to the task throughout the year. <br /> 42 <br /> 43 This the 19th day of September 2017. <br /> 44 <br /> 45 A motion was made by Commissioner McKee, seconded by Commissioner Price for the <br /> 46 Board to approve the proclamation designating October as Disability Employment Awareness <br /> 47 Month and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 48 <br />
