I ) L II1 <br /> 1 ��i RO <br /> )ao;)ll I ()lfirw�..u�. <br /> Program Profile <br /> Description/Overview per Memorandum of Understanding: <br /> • maintain a positive, safe and orderly school environment for all stakeholders through law <br /> enforcement, informal counseling and educational efforts <br /> • proactively encourage students to develop positive attitudes toward the school, education, <br /> and law enforcement officers <br /> • establish strong rapport with staff, faculty, students, community members <br /> • help students deal with the pressures they face such as the use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco, <br /> peer pressure, bullying and harassment <br /> • act as a link to other service agencies that provide preventative and counseling services <br /> • act swiftly and cooperatively when responding to major disruptions and flagrant criminal <br /> offenses at school that occur on campus and threaten the safety of students and staff <br /> • collaborate with the school team working to produce outcomes that balance the duty to <br /> preserve the campus from disruptive forces without criminalizing every incident and while <br /> nurturing and protecting students (National Association of School Resource Officers) <br /> Policy: § 115C-407.17. Prevention of school violence. Schools shall develop and implement methods <br /> and strategies for promoting school environments that are free of bullying or harassing behavior. <br /> (2009-212, s. 1; 2009-570, s. 39.) <br /> Innovative and Best Practice: <br /> • Use of the Tripod Model - law enforcement, informal counseling and educational efforts <br /> • Use of social media to aid investigations <br /> • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design -courses and certification focused on the <br /> built environment and how to increase safety for all users of the campus <br /> • Including SROs in the student support team at each school <br /> Professional Learning: In addition to annual local police department required trainings, SROs taken the <br /> following CHCCS professional development during the last couple of years: Restorative Practice <br /> Training, Diversity/Equity training, Autism training, Crisis Prevention Intervention training and <br /> recertification, Sexual Violence in Students' Lives, Sexual Assault in Teen Lives, What First Responders <br /> Need To Know About Non-Caregiver Assault, and Child Sexual Abuse. Multi-tiered Systems of Support <br /> will be provided soon. In addition, Ms. Hutchison and Dr. LoFrese will attend an upcoming workshop on <br /> building effective school resource officer partnerships. <br /> Evidence of Effectiveness: <br /> National Association of School Resource Officers -SRO programs came to prominence during the <br /> 1990's. School crime has dropped nearly 50% between 1994 and 2009, and 17% between 2000 and <br /> 2009 alone. <br /> Jennings et al., (2011). 2006 School Survey on Crime and Safety(SSOCS) by the National Center for <br /> Education Statistics, USED.The presence and number of SROs is significantly associated with a lower <br /> incidence of serious school violence. <br /> Theriot (2009).
