41
Natural Area. As noted, another access point will be developed at Seven Mile
Creek Nature Park (adjacent to historic Moorefields). Additional locations in
southwestern Orange County will be identified and secured as the actual MST
trail route is secured through that area.
5. Construction, Infrastructure and Signage
In many ways, the actual trail construction is the simplest and most resource-
laden of the facets of the MST project. Once the time comes for trail construction,
it is expected that County Parks staff (which includes several certified Master
Trail Builders) and the County's Landscape Architect and Land Conservation
Manager will work with the many expert trail building resources of the Friends of
the Mountains to Sea Trail (FMST) to physically construct the natural surface
trail.
As the Segment 11 MST project continues over the next decade, certain
locations and situations may call for special signage, or infrastructure needs to
augment and support the trail.
Examples of this might include the aforementioned pedestrian signage and alert
system at the Dimmocks Mill Road interstate overpass, periodic signage along
the trail itself, and signs at other road crossings and waystations or nodes.
Although the proposed route attempts to avoid close proximity to homes, there
may also be needs in certain locations for privacy fencing, landscaped berms or
thickets, boardwalk sections and other improvements.
Waystations, such as the planned node at Seven Mile Creek, might include
infrastructure such as a well and water source, fire ring, restroom and limited
parking.
Many of these specific needs will not become apparent until the trail easements
are completed and trail design is underway. Funding for the MST in the County
Capital Investment Plan does include amounts for a projected level of
infrastructure and signage need.
6. Other Actions
In addition to adhering to plans and standards from State parks for the MST
route and construction, other special conditions may arise along the trail route.
One currently known special situation is the set of conditions adopted by the
OWASA Board of Directors in August 2016. These conditions may be found as
an attachment to these materials, and while this segment of the proposed trail
would not be the first to be worked on under the proposed prioritization herein,
9
