35
from Occoneechee Mountain to the Alamance County line in the southwestern
corner of the county. Staff's effort to identify the proposed Segment 11 route
shown on the attached map focused on:
• Staying as close as practical to the MST Master Plan corridor (swath)
• Looking for natural features that the trail might follow, where possible
• Trying to route the proposed trail on larger, undeveloped parcels of land,
and staying away from existing homes —where this was possible, and
• For the OWASA-owned land around Cane Creek, using the OWASA
Board approved conditions to guide routing choices
The result, which is shown as the "Proposed Trail" on the following map, may be
described in narrative form as taking the following general route:
• From Occoneechee Mountain, west along the edge of private properties
and the 1-85/1-40 interchange to Dimmocks Mill Road
• South on Dimmocks Mill Road, crossing over the bridge spanning 1-85/1-40
• West across private property into the Moorefields historic site and the
County's future Seven Mile Creek Nature Park (part of the Upper Eno
Preserve), and traveling through the nature preserve before existing south
• South through a large undeveloped property and then across and on the
edge of several other undeveloped parcels to Borland Road
• From Borland Road, following the edge of private property and accessing
County-owned land before following the western side of Cane Creek on
private property heading south to Bradshaw Quarry Road
• Crossing Bradshaw Quarry Road, the proposed trail continues along Cane
Creek and enters OWASA-owned land near the northern tip of Cane
Creek Reservoir
• The proposed trail then follows previously-reconnoitered possible trail on
OWASA land near the Cane Creek Reservoir, before heading west toward
the northern part of Apple Mill Road
• Crossing along the edge of private properties, the proposed route
continues west and then runs for a segment on Bradshaw Quarry Road
before re-entering OWASA-owned land along the southwest side of the
reservoir and thence to NC 54, and
• Finally, the proposed trail would continue west on NC 54 to the
intersection at Oaks, and thence would cross NC 54 and continue along
Saxapahaw-Bethlehem Church Road to Alamance County (headed
toward Saxaphahaw)
3
