The following resolution was introduced by Alderman Gist and duly seconded by Alderman <br /> Haven-O'Donnell: <br /> A RESOLUTION PROVIDING RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMIVIISSIONERS AND THE DURHAM-CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO <br /> TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON THE PROPOSED ORANGE COUNTY <br /> TRANSIT PLAN AND SUPPORTING A NOVEMBER 2011 REFERENDUM TO INCREASE <br /> THE COUNTY SALES TAX TO IMPLEMENT THE PLAN <br /> Resolution No. 129/2010-11 <br /> • WHEREAS,the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization and <br /> Triangle Transit have proposed to construct light rail between Chapel Hill and Durham;and <br /> WHEREAS,House Bill 148,approved in 2009,provides for funding from an increase in the <br /> county sales tax and vehicle registration fee to fund the construction of the light rail system;and <br /> WHEREAS,House Bill 148 requires the development and adoption of a county transit plan to <br /> guide the use of additional sales tax and vehicle registration fees to construct and operate the <br /> light rail system and provide for bus services within Orange County;and <br /> WHEREAS,the Town has worked in conjunction with Orange County,Chapel Hill, <br /> Hillsborough,the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,and Durham County to develop an <br /> Orange County Transit Plan which provides funding for bus services within Orange County and <br /> provides for the construction and operation of a light rail system between Chapel Hill and <br /> Durham;and <br /> WHEREAS,House Bill 148 requires the approval of the Orange County Transit Plan by the <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners and the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Transportation <br /> Advisory Committee; and <br /> WHEREAS,implementation of the'h cent sales tax increase requires approval through a county- <br /> wide referendum;and <br /> • <br />
