30 <br /> 1 • Campaign, "Drive Safely, Ride Safely" is designed to foster mutual respect and shared <br /> 2 interest in road safety; and <br /> 3 • A series of actions centered on a public education and awareness campaign, improved <br /> 4 data collection and measurements, and traffic safety improvements. <br /> 5 <br /> 6 1-YEAR FUNDING REQUEST <br /> 7 • $15,000 for FY 17-18 <br /> 8 o Posters and flyers <br /> 9 o Signage design and placement at entry points in county (5+) <br /> 10 o Bumper stickers/magnets <br /> 11 o Yard signs <br /> 12 o Website development and social media <br /> 13 o Launch campaign kickoff (signs, contests, ads, etc.) <br /> 14 <br /> 15 OTHER REPORT RECOMMENDATIONS <br /> 16 • BSTF Implementation Committee; <br /> 17 • County staff support to help launch the campaign; and <br /> 18 • Appointing a future committee to study infrastructure improvements in areas of the <br /> 19 county where cycling is especially popular. <br /> 20 <br /> 21 OTHER RESOURCE GROUPS <br /> 22 • Cycling advocacy groups <br /> 23 • Local civic groups <br /> 24 • Orange County Schools <br /> 25 • NCDOT <br /> 26 • Law enforcements agencies <br /> 27 • EMS <br /> 28 <br /> 29 Chair Dorosin asked if the budget request is based on supporting this drive safely/ride <br /> 30 safely program. <br /> 31 Abigaile Pittman said it would support the education and education campaign, and to <br /> 32 bring some awareness of safe bicycling. <br /> 33 Commissioner Rich asked if the website will live on the Orange County website, and if it <br /> 34 will be linked to the Towns. <br /> 35 Abigaile Pittman said yes, but there is limited flexibility on the design of the website, and <br /> 36 it would have to be a sub set of the Planning Department on the transportation site. <br /> 37 Commissioner Rich said she is concerned that people will not be able to find this <br /> 38 information. <br /> 39 Abigaile Pittman said she has voiced this same concern. She said it can be closer to <br /> 40 the front of the Planning Department's page. <br /> 41 Commissioner Rich said the Intergovernmental Parks work group is working on a lot of <br /> 42 maps that have different aspects, such as hiking, mountain biking, etc. She said some of these <br /> 43 maps may be able to be incorporated. <br /> 44 Commissioner Rich referred to the comment that change comes about through <br /> 45 education, not laws. She asked if examples could be provided of the type of education that can <br /> 46 be offered. <br /> 47 Heidi Perry, Chair of the Bicycle Safety Task Force and Outboard Chair, said this can be <br /> 48 done in a few ways, and they have heard from a member of the Highway Safety Research <br /> 49 Center, who had great influence on this philosophical approach.
