Staff intends to repeat this comprehensive facilities self- <br /> assessment every 5 years using this self-assessment, repair, and prevention model. <br /> Before the next assessment, staff also recommends that the County stays abreast of new <br /> assistive technologies to further increase facility accessibility. For example, a new trend that is <br /> required by an alternative code from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), but not <br /> as yet by the ADA, is to install a vertical grab bar in addition to the horizontal grab bars required <br /> in ADA restroom stalls. These vertical grab bars are said to be easier to use to help lift oneself <br /> up from a seated position, and work in tandem with the existing bars.
