22 <br /> 2017-2022 Orange County Master Aging Plan <br /> I ieaith <br /> Knowing that adults are living longer, Orange County must take preventive measures to support <br /> residents' health over time. Recognizing leading causes of death will be critical to this task. <br /> The top 5 leading causes of death for older adults age 65+ in Orange County <br /> are9: <br /> 1. Cancer <br /> 2. Heart Disease <br /> 3. Cerebrovascular Diseases <br /> 4. Alzheimer's Disease <br /> 5. Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases <br /> This list displays a ranking change since the last MAP. Deaths related to chronic <br /> lower respiratory diseases were ranked 4th in 2010. These county rankings are <br /> similar to that of the state, but the leading cause of death for older adults in all <br /> of North Carolina is heart disease rather than cancer. <br /> These issues should all be considered high priority in the discussion of how to best serve our <br /> community's older adult population. When considering diseases like Alzheimer's disease, it is <br /> also important to consider the needs of caregivers. Through serving their needs, we also serve <br /> the needs of the aging community. <br /> Summary <br /> The description of Orange County's older adult population provided here offers context to <br /> understand our proposed goals, objectives, and strategies. Additionally, these data influenced <br /> the work groups and guided discussions in a variety of ways, both directly and indirectly. As the <br /> OCDOA works over the next five years to implement the following recommendations, we will <br /> continue to consider the intersecting identities of the older adults that we serve. <br /> 16 <br />
