I have a BA in History and a Masters of Arts in Teaching
(MAT). I worked for 30 years in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, 27 as principal of
Carrboro Elementary.
served as chair of the Carrboro Year 2000 Task and followed that by serving 9 !/2 years on the
Carrboro Board of Aldermen. I have also served on the Orange County Visitors Bureau, PTA
Thrift Shop Board, Sister Cities, Carrboro Parks and Rec board and most recently on the
OUT Board as member and Vice-chair from 2005-2012. I have lived in Orange County since
1972.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
I have a strong interest and experience in citizen participation in the affairs of the community and
with my background on the Board of Alderman have a particular interest and experience in
guiding development. I would like tuffer myself as a resource in helping Orange County to
best serve the needs/interests of the County and its citizens.
Conflict of Interest:
No
Supplemental Questions:
Orange County Planning Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT)
Please list the work/volunteer experience/qualifications that would add to your expertise
for this board.
see response to question# 1
What unique perspective can you bring to the Orange County Planning Board?
I live in the Bingham Township and feel I am familiar with the issues that may come before the
Planning Board. I feel I can speak to the towns' perspective with my time on the Board of
Aldermen and the county position's as well having discussed many of them as a member of
the Out Board. Before I left the OUT Board I chaired the planning for the 30 year Transportation
Plan.
What do you see as the responsibilities of this board, and what do you hope to
accomplish if appointed?
The Planning Board looks at development issues and, after thorough examination, makes
recommendations to the County Commissioners on issues they ought to consider and
suggestions on how they might want to proceed.
What do you consider to be be the most important issues facing Orange County related
to growth?
Sustainability, preservation of sensitive properties, impacts on the rural heritage, traffic and
carefully regulated development both commercial and residential.
What role should the Planning Board take in guiding and regulating growth?
The Planning Board must oversee development in Orange County ensuring that it satisfies the
criteria established by the ordinances, goals and priorities, fills a need in managed growth and
expanded tax base. We are not going tcget more land in Orange County and therefore must
be particularly sensitive in preserving the assets we have being especially sensitive in protecting
our environment.
How would you,as a member of the Planning Board, contribute to the implementation of
the Board of Commissioners' adopted Goals and Priorities?
