2
Guidelines for Display of Art Work in County Buildings
Some works of art owned by Orange County can be loaned to any County
Department through the Orange County Arts Commission for display in
conference rooms, lobbies or hallway areas for a maximum period of (1)
year. Information regarding the location of the artwork will be kept on file
in the Arts Commission office. There is no charge for this service. Orange
County Departments should contact the Arts Commission office to request
a work of art for display in appropriate areas of County buildings.
Care and Handling of Art Work
(The following suggestions reflect museum quality standards. They are
presented for your information as ideal conditions for the display of art
work.)
Keep display area temperature at 70 degrees F (+ or - 5 degrees).
Stability is more important than actual numbers, within reason.
Keep relative humidity at 50% to .55% (+ or - 5%). Avoid areas prone to
damp heat such as kitchens and bathrooms.
Display delicate media (drawings, prints, watercolors, photographs) at low
light levels -not more than 10foot-candles. (Foot-candles are a common
unit of measurement used to calculate adequate lighting levels in
buildings or outdoor spaces.)
Display paintings (acrylic, oil) at 20 foot-candles maximum.
Do not expose art works to direct sunlight (use shades, blinds, drapes,
etc., over windows).
Avoid placing objects near heating/air conditioning vents, windows, or
frequently used exterior doors.
Delicate media ideally should not be displayed indefinitely.
