<br />Brain Cancer -There was one report of brain cancer., The respondent was not certain of the <br />relative's age at the time of diagnosis. <br />Breast Cancer -Breast cancer- is one of the leading cancers among women in the United States. It <br />is typically diagnosed in women aged 40 or older. In addition to gender and age, risk factors for <br />breast cancer include race, family history, and history of hormonal therapy (American Cancer <br />Society [ACS], 2006). According to the NC Central Cancer Registry (NCCCR), between 1998 and <br />2002, Orange County had 487 breast cancer cases (2005). <br />Pour women reported breast cancer diagnoses during the telephone survey. Three of these women <br />were over the age of 40 when diagnosed and the fourth respondent was unable to provide the age of <br />the relative diagnosed with breast cancer.. <br />Colorectal Cancer -Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer among men <br />and women in the United States.. Persons aged 50 years or older have an increased risk of diagnosis. <br />Current research shows that African Americans aze diagnosed at an earlier age than persons of other <br />races. African Americans also have higher diagnosis rates and shorter survival rates (ACS, 2006). <br />Orange County had 168 colorectal cancer cases between 1998 and 2002 (NCCCR, 2005). <br />Four telephone survey respondents reported a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. All of the diagnoses <br />were among persons older than 50 years of age. Two were African American and two were <br />Caucasian. <br />Esophaeeal Cancer -The risk of esophageal cancer increases with age, as nearly half of all people <br />diagnosed are older than 70 years of age. Men have a higher rate of esophageal cancer than women <br />and African Americans are more likely to develop this cancer than Caucasians (ACS, 2006). <br />There was one report of esophageal cancer in this survey. The respondent was 77 years of age at <br />time of diagnosis and is African American. <br />Liver Cancer -Risk factors for liver cancer include gender and lifestyle factors such as tobacco and <br />alcohol use, obesity, and enviromnental/chemical exposure. Two respondents reported a diagnosis of <br />liver cancer. <br />Lung Cancer -Lung cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in Orange County. The primary <br />risk factors for lung cancer are tobacco use (smoking) and exposure to environmental hazards such <br />as asbestos and radon. Orange County had 262 hmg cancer cases between 1998 and 2002 (NCCCR, <br />2005). Three survey respondents reported a diagnosis of hmg cancer. <br />Hodgkin's Disease -This is cancer of the lymph nodes, Risk factors for lymphoma may be related <br />to genetics, lifestyle, and the environment. One respondent reported a diagnosis of Hodgkin's <br />lymphoma. <br />Multiple Myeloma -Generally 5-6 new cases world be expected each year for the county. Two <br />respondents reported a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. Both were African American and over 50 <br />years of age when diagnosed.
