We are repeating the mailing in hopes that you will respond by
requesting a water sample analyses and answering a telephone survey. Orange County
Health Department staff is conducting a study of well water quality along specific
stretches of Mill Creek and High Rock Roads. The study was approved at recent
meetings of the Orange County Boards of Health and County Commissioners in
response to concerns from community members in that area about well water quality
and cancer rates. A separate study of cancer rates in the community using phone
interviews will also occur tluough December.
Participation in the well water quality study is completely voluntary and you are under
no obligation to respond to this notice. If you choose to participate, please complete the
attached application and return it by November .30th to the Orange County Health
Department. Alternately, you catr fill it out and give it to Glenda or Joe Holloway who
live at 4620 Mill Creek Road and they will deliver it to us for action. There will be no
char e for any water sample conducted as part of this study.
Please understated that the water samples results are subject to open records laws but
will not contain any medical information. The application must be signed by the owner
or tenant before we can collect samples so please be sure to include your telephone
number and sign that portion of the form prior to returning it. The samples will include
bacteriological, inorganic chemical, petroleum, pesticide and radon tests. The air
portion of the radon takes two to four days to complete, so we will arrange to pick the
kit up from your home after it is finished.
There will be no action required by the Health Department for water problems
discovered during the survey unless the home is rented. Our office will provide advice
and recommendations to owners who wish to fix problems in their own home. If the
property is rented, and the water is found unsafe to drink, we will work with the
landlord to correct the problem as required by the appropriate laws and rules.
z
Your participation in this study is very important to you and your community, so please
give it careful consideration before declining. If you have questions, please give the
Environmental Health office a call at 919-245-2360 and we will gladly attempt to
address any concerns that you may have..
~n
r
m
v
2
6
v
E
c
0
c
w
Dr. Rosemary Sununers, Orange County Health Director
Ron Holdway, Orange County Enviromnental Health Services Director
Page 42 of 47
