to Non-Hodgkin's Lymnhoma -One respondent reported diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, (one of many different types of lymph cancer). This respondent was .37 years of age when diagnosed. Ovarian -Women who have experienced menopause have an increased risk of ovarian cancer. Half of all ovarian cancers are found in women over the age of 63. Risk factors may also include family history, onset and frequency of menstrual cycles, obesity, use of fertility drugs, smoking and alcohol use, and use of hormonal replacement therapy. One respondent reported a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. This person was 35 years of age when diagnosed, Prostate -Risk factors for prostate cancer include age, race, nationality, family history, and diet. Two out of tluee males will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and diagnosis rates are higher among African American males than any other race (ACS, 2006). Orange County had 294 prostate cancer cases between 1998 and 2002 (NCCCR, 2005). Two males in the survey reported prostate cancer. One respondent, an African American male, was 54 years of age when diagnosed, and the other, a Caucasian male, was 68 years when diagnosed. Slcin Melanoma - Rislc factors for skin melanomas include exposure to ultraviolet radiation, age, family history, skin type, and gender. It is most cormnoilly diagnosed among older males (ACS, 2006). One skin melanoma diagnosis was reported by a Caucasian resident who was 55 yeazs of age when diagnosed. Stomach Cancer -Most stomach cancers are diagnosed when people are in their SOs or 60s. More men than women are diagnosed with stomach cazicer. Two Africazi American residents in the survey reported stomach cancer diagnoses. One respondent was 50 years of age when diagnosed. The age at the time of diagnosis for the other respondent was unknown.. Untcnown Cancer Tvnes -Two people reported cancer diagnoses for relatives who were deceased and they could not remember the type of cancer diagnosed. What is a Cancer Cluster? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a cancer cluster is defined as a greater than expected number of cancers among a group of people, in a specific geographic area, over a period of time. The following factors aze considered when trying to determine whether a cancer cluster exists: (1) cancer is a common disease affecting I in 4 people in their lifetime; (2) the term cancer refers not to a single disease, but to a group of related, but different diseases; (.3) a cancer cluster may be due to chance alone; (4) an apparent cancer cluster is more likely to be genuine if the cases consist of one type of cancer, a rare type of cancer, or a type of cancer that is not usually found in an age group.
