62 <br /> Union County Solid Waste Management SCS ENGINEERS <br /> documentation for the County's landfill fifteen (15) <br /> -. groundwater monitoring wells and two (3) surface water <br /> sampling locations for the 15A NCAC Subchapter 2L <br /> Appendix I and II water quality constituents. <br /> Landfill Groundwater Contamination Remediation. SCS <br /> - - provided field testing and designed a remedial strategy for <br /> removing contaminates from the landfill property's <br /> groundwater. The remedial strategy included a combination of <br /> monitored natural attenuation (MNA) and phyto-remediation. <br /> The phyto-remediation system, utilizing beds of hybrid poplar <br /> trees installed in the downgradient region of the groundwater <br /> monitoring wells in which 2L exceedances have occurred to <br /> restore groundwater quality in these regions. In areas of the <br /> landfill which are unsuitable to install phyto-remediation beds <br /> due to groundwater depths and/or steep topography, a <br /> groundwater extraction system is installed and the extracted <br /> groundwater applied to a phyto-remediation area through drip <br /> irrigation. Additionally natural attenuation is also used to <br /> degrade certain constituents of concern which have exceeded <br /> the 15A NCAC 2L groundwater quality standards (2L <br /> groundwater quality standard) within the reducing environment <br /> of the uppermost pervasive aquifer. <br /> Construction and Demolition (C&D) Landfill Closure. SCS <br /> staff prepared a closure design and bidding and construction <br /> drawings and specifications for 13.2 acres of the County's <br /> C&D Landfill that is located on-top of a non-Subtitle D MSW <br /> Landfill. In addition, bidding and construction administration <br /> support services were <br /> provided to the County during <br /> bidding, contractor <br /> - -r, procurement and construction. <br /> r-q• SCS staff provided <br /> construction quality assurance JA <br /> (CQA) services during landfill <br /> closure construction. Upon - <br /> completion of the landfill <br /> closure construction, a CQA <br /> Certification Report was <br /> prepared and submitted to <br /> NCDENR and subsequently approved. <br /> Project Profile <br />
