The United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and
subsequent developments, including the Kyoto Protocol are driving current efforts towards GHG
trading.
SCS is among the firms pioneering our nation's efforts at reducing GHG emissions from landfills
in order to combat climate change. SCS Engineers is actively involved in developing markets
for Greenhouse Gas emissions reductions both domestically and internationally. Our work
includes engineering assignments on projects in various stages of development in South
America,North America, Oceania, and Asia. We are fully aware of the existing and developing
markets where landfill owners can sell GHG credits by voluntarily installing methane recovery
systems. SCS has provided the following services within the carbon credit arena:
• Arranging for sale of carbon credits/monetization.
• Implementation of monitoring, recordkeeping, and quality assurance programs to
generate carbon credits at landfills.
• Estimation of methane generation rates at landfills, and quantifying the GHG emissions.
• Development of GHG protocols for landfill projects.
• Development of GHG emissions inventories and verification of GHG reductions.
• Tracking GHG programs at the international, national, regional, state, and local levels in
order to advise our clients as to the effects on their businesses.
22
