1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: February 21, 2017 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 4-a <br /> SUBJECT: Orange County Arts Commission Fall 2016 Grant Recipients <br /> DEPARTMENT: Orange County Arts <br /> Commission <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Fall 2016 Grant Awards Spreadsheet Katie Murray, 919-245-2335 <br /> Copy of Awards to be Distributed <br /> "Specific Attendee List to Follow" <br /> PURPOSE: To present checks to local artists and arts organizations receiving Fall 2016 <br /> Orange County Arts Grants. <br /> BACKGROUND: The Orange County Arts Commission awards grants for art programs to local <br /> artists, schools and nonprofit organizations from funds received from the state and Orange <br /> County government for this purpose. These funds are distributed for arts projects in all arts <br /> disciplines. Each grant recipient must match the granted amount at least dollar-for-dollar in <br /> order to receive funding. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: A total of $25,440 was awarded to seven nonprofit organizations, <br /> fourteen schools and two artists during the 2016 Fall Grant Cycle. The North Carolina Arts <br /> Council provided $1,600 of the funds awarded, and funding totaling $23,840 was from Orange <br /> County. The Commission received 33 applications, six of which were first-time applicants. Of <br /> the 23 grants awarded, five were awarded to first-time recipients. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to <br /> this agenda item: <br /> • GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND <br /> INEQUITY <br /> The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br /> religious or philosophical beliefs; sex; gender or sexual orientation; national origin or <br /> ethnic background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic <br /> status. <br /> The impact for traditionally under-served populations and geographic location is a part of the <br /> grant evaluation criteria across all of the Commission's grant categories. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board acknowledge the local <br /> recipients of these awards during the February 21, 2017 meeting with the presentation of <br /> checks by the Board Chair. <br />
