1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: December 13, 2016
Action Agenda
Item No. 6-p
SUBJECT: My Brother's Keeper Community Challenge Recommendation for Movement of
Youth (MOY) to be the Lead Agency for My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Orange
Initiative
DEPARTMENT: County Manager's Office
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
My Brother's Keeper— Orange County Bonnie B. Hammersley, 919-245-2300
Phase II Proposal
PURPOSE: To express support for the recommendation from My Brother's Keeper
Community Challenge that unanimously approved for Movement of Youth (MOY) to
become the lead agency in the next phase of the My Brother's Keeper (MBK)-Orange
County; and encourage MOY to submit an outside agency application to facilitate BOCC
consideration of future financial support if necessary.
BACKGROUND: The County has fostered the creation of MBK-Orange County through an ad-
hoc committee under the leadership of Commissioner Renee Price. The County has provided
limited financial support to facilitate initial program activities. The program has now grown to the
point where it is able to function independently.
An outside agency has been identified to serve as the lead agency to continue building MBK-
Orange County and to stabilize the program and move it to the next phase. At the BOCC
meeting on December 5, 2016, Atrayus Goode, Executive Director of MOY presented
information on the proposal for Phase II of MBK-Orange County.
The BOCC requested that the County Manager and the County Attorney clarify what the action
should be to illustrate the BOCC's support for MOY to become the lead agency of MBK-
Orange County. Given that the MOY is a non-profit agency, the County Manager is
recommending that the BOCC express its support for MBK program and encourage MOY to
submit an outside agency application to facilitate the BOCC consideration of future financial
support if necessary.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact at this time.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goals are applicable
to this agenda item:
• GOAL: ENSURE ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY
