ORANGE COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT 33
306F REVERE ROAD
HILLSBOROUGH. NORTH CAROLINA 17278
MEMORANDUM
TO: JOHN LINK, County Manager
FROM: GENE BELL, Planner III G,ff
DATE: DECEMBER 18, 1989
RE: BEN JOHNSON ROAD/I-85 CORRIDOR CONCERNS
In a recent meeting, the Transportation Advisory Subcommittee
(TAS) expressed concerns over the impending closing of West
Ten Road where it underpasses Interstate 85 and intersects
with Ben Johnson Road. As you may remember, this roadway is
scheduled to be barricaded and closed as part of the "Efland
Interchange Project" currently being finalized by N.C. DOT.
Currently, West Ten Road to its intersection with Ben Johnson
Road serves as a north-south connector route under I-85
for cars, pedestrians and cyclists. As such, the TAS has
asked that the feasibility of providing a culverted tunnel or
similar structure be considered. It is the opinion of the TAS
that this section of West Ten Road is one of the few
remaining passageways across 1-85 linking the Hillsborough
area to points south for non-motorized vehicles.
The Department of Transportation will shortly be asking for
County comments on the Efland interchange project. The TAS
would like to ask that the feasibility of tunnel or culvert -
as opposed to closing off the road altogether - receive due
consideration.
I will be coordinating comments along these lines with Paul
Thames as the Environmental Impact Statement comments are
packaged for return to DOT. Please contact me if you have
questions or concerns .
•
cc: Paul Thames, County Engineer
Marvin Collins, Planning Director
Chris Best, Chairman - TAS
DK8:WESTBEN.DOC
