R-10
25•
Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plan established by the Division of
Highways and the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and
Community Development.
It has been determined there is no practicable alternative to the
proposed new construction in wetlands and that the proposed action
includes all practicable measures to minimize harm to wetlands which may
result from such use.
J. Stream Modification
Approximately 5600 linear feet of stream channels that parallel the
existing I-85 roadway fill will be piped or rechanneled as part of the
project. In many cases these streams link with previously rechanneled or
piped water courses in highly developed areas. This rechannelization
will be coordinated with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and appro-
priate state agencies in accordance with the Fish and Wildlife Coordi-
nation Act (16 U.S.C. 662a) .
K. Section 106 Properties
1. Historic/Architectural Resources
Two historic houses were identified in the EA: (1) the Klotz
House, located on the north side of 1-85 off SR 3060 in Guilford
County and (2) the Alexander Dickson House, located in the southwest
quadrant of the I-85/NC 86 interchange in Orange County. The EA
indicates the project will have "no effect" on either property.
The only change in the project in the vicinity of the Klotz
House is the proposed eight-laning of I-85. As noted earlier, this
widening will not require additional right of way.
Since the FONSI was completed the Alexander Dickson House has
been moved from the above location near I-85 to the historic dis-
trict of Hillsborough. The structure is presently being restored
and serves a visitors ' center for tours of the historic district.
Further consultation has been undertaken with the State His-
toric Preservation Officer. The SHPO has concurred that there are
no buildings , structures, objects, districts, or sites of historic
architectural significance eligible for the National Register
located within the area of potential effect of Projects I-303 and
1-304. Correspondence from the SHPO regarding historic archi-
tectural resources is included in the Appendix (see page RA-1) .
2. Archaeological Resources
The FONSI indicates an archaeological survey of the project
area was conducted at the request of the SHPO. As a result of the
study, it was found that no important archaeological resources exist
within the area of potential environmental impact of Projects 1-303,
1-304, and I-305.
