NEED FOR THE PROPOSED REVISIONS
A. Traffic Volumes
Projected traffic volumes alon g Project I-303 for the year 1990
range from 41,900 vehicles per day (vpd) east of Burlington to 50,700 vpd
west of Burlington. Projected traffic volumes for the year 2010 range
from 47,900 vpd near Greensboro to 100,100 vpd west of Burlington. The
2010 projections are based upon the I-85 Greensboro bypass (TIP Project
No. 1-2402) being completed and in operation. As noted in Section I.B.1.
of this report, Project I-2402 is scheduled to be let to contract in
Fiscal Year 1996.
Projected traffic volumes along Project I-304 range from 34,900 vpd.
east of Efland to 41,900 vpd east of Burlington. Projected traffic
volumes for the year 2010 at the above locations are 71,500 vpd and
84,100 vpd, respectively.
- B. Capacity Analyses
1. Six-Lane Versus Eight-Lane Widening
Capacity analyses were performed to compare the level-of-
service at which I-85 would operate assuming both six-lane and
eight-lane widening. Six-lane widening was recommended in the FONSI
for Projects 1-303 and 304; however, eight-lane widening is now
proposed. The results of these analyses for the years 1990 and 2010
are shown in Table 2.
Table 2
Levels-of-Service
1990 - 2010
•
Project 6 lanes 8 lanes 6 lanes 8 lanes
1-303 D-E C .
