PROPOSED ACTION <br /> A. Project Status <br /> The 1990-1996 NCDOT Transportation Improvement Program calls for <br /> widening 1-85 from four to eight lanes from the I-85/US 29 intersection <br /> in Greensboro to west of I-40 in Orange County under Projects I-303 and <br /> 1-304. The segment of I-85 within the limits of Project I-305 (from I-40 <br /> near Hillsborough to the Orange-Durham County line) is to remain six-lane <br /> widening. <br /> Project I-303 begins just west of the I-85/US 421 intersection in <br /> Greensboro and ends east of the 1-85/NC 54 intersection in Graham (see <br /> Figure 1). Project 1-304 begins at that point and ends east of the <br /> I-85/SR 1144 intersection near Efland. Right of way acquisition is <br /> underway for both projects. The initial construction contract, Section <br /> I-303K, is scheduled to be let in December .of 1989. Section I-303K <br /> includes the 2.3-mile segment of I-85 from just east•of the I-85/NC 49 <br /> intersection to just east of the I-85/NC 54 intersection near Graham <br /> (Alamance, County). • <br /> Project I=305 begins at the 1-85/SR 1006 intersection near Hills- <br /> borough and ends at the Orange-Durham County line (see Figure 1) . Right <br /> of way acquisition and construction for that project are scheduled to <br /> begin after Fiscal Year 1996. Due to the recent opening of the new <br /> section of I-40 that links with I-85 near Hillsborough (Project 1-9) , <br /> traffic volumes along I-85 within the limits of Project 1-305 are lower <br /> than volumes within the limits of Projects I-303 and I-304. It is <br /> anticipated the six-laning of I-85 proposed in the FONSI will provide an <br /> acceptable level-of-service along that project. <br /> This reevaluation covers only Projects 1-303 and I-304. Project <br /> 1-305 will be reevaluated under a separate' environmental document at a <br /> later time. <br /> B. Proposed Revisions to Project <br /> • <br /> 1. Eight-lane Widening .. <br /> The FONSI calls for widening I-85 to six lanes. It is now <br /> recommended that the segment of I-85 from east of the I-85/McConnell <br /> Road (SR 3000) intersection near Greensboro to east of the 1-85/ <br /> SR 1144 intersection near Efland (see Figure 1) be widened to eight <br /> • <br />
