BACKGROUND: On February 5, a citizen brought to the attention of the Board of Commissioners a survey being prepared for a natural gas pipeline in northern Orange County. The survey is being done for the Public Service Company of North Carolina, Inc. It is proposed that a 12" to 18" natural gas pipeline be extended from the existing regulating station on Highway 70 (about 1000 feet east of Buckhorn Road) , to Leasville NC (midway between Roxboro and Yanceyville, in Caswell County. ) The proposed route of the pipeline is in a northeasterly direction from Hwy 70/Buckhorn Road toward Lake Orange, continuing to the east around Lake Orange, and then running in a more north-northwesterly direction through the western portion of Cedar Grove Township (map attached) . The proposed pipeline will use a pressure of 500 to 700 pounds per square inch (psi) . Any pipeline with a pressure greater than 100 psi is classified in the Zoning Ordinance as a transmission line and will require approval of a Class B Special Use Permit from the Board of Adjustment. The Special Use Permit requirement applies only to the portion of the pipeline in Cheeks Township.
