GUIDELINES FOR ESTIMATING SCHOOL <br /> CONSTRUCTION COSTS <br /> October, 1986 <br /> The following guidelines are intended as a tool for developing <br /> estimates in planning new school construction and additions.preliminary cost planning purposes only. More detailed estimates should be obtained <br /> from design professionals when projects have been more specifically defined. <br /> It must be kept in mind that costs will vary among variables as availability of contractors and 1 abor,phterraiin, material <br /> costs and transportation. Costs will also vary according to design, materials <br /> selected, space desired and quality demand through community expectations. <br /> Complete New Schools <br /> Approximate Estimated Approximate <br /> Type School Sq. Cost Per Pupil** <br /> Elementary 100 $60.00 17` $6,000 <br /> Middle/Junior 120 60.00 7,200 <br /> High School 160 60.00 9,600 <br /> The above estimates should be increased to provide for the following: <br /> o Site and development <br /> o Special site problems <br /> o Up to 10 percent for movable furniture and equipment <br /> o Up to 10 percent for fees and related costs <br /> o On-site water and sewage <br /> o Increased cost due to inflation <br /> o Remote areas where labor and delivery of materials are more <br /> costly <br /> o Small schools <br /> a Isolated areas where there are few contractors <br /> o Areas with much competition for labor force due to other large <br /> construction projects <br /> o Stadium complex--$200,000 to $1,000,000 <br /> Additions <br /> Major additions should be calculated at $45 - $70 per square foot. Increase <br /> estimates to provide for: <br /> • <br /> o Considerations listed above <br /> o Auditoriums, gymnasiums, and cafeteria/kitchens <br /> o Kitchens, toilets, shower rooms , etc. , when they are a signifi- <br /> cant part of the addition <br /> o New HVAC System if required for a small addition <br /> o Elevators--2 stop, minimum size--$65,000 - $100,000 <br /> *These approximate square footages have been increased to allow for <br /> compliance with the Basic Education Program recommendations. <br /> **Based on $60.00/sq.ft. This figure can vary from $50 - $70/sq. ft. or more <br /> depending upon design, size, materials selected, timing, etc. <br />
